The desire that heals and blesses

From the June 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When our desires are shaped and fashioned by God's law, we rise spiritually and stop trying to "use" Christian Science to achieve material results. Through the spiritual elevation of thinking we are blessed, and our thoughts bless others also. Scientific prayer is healing prayer; the spiritual blessings that we earn (that is, that we awake to and utilize) help elevate humanity.

Christian Science points out that though the desire to be healed, to be useful, and to live with a sense of well-being is legitimate, it is how we pray for these blessings that is really important.

Individuals who have been healed in Christian Science of so-called incurable disease can testify to the fact that prayer does heal when it is focused on the demonstration of spiritual reality. This prayer is not for material gain; it does not just implore God to heal a physical malady, to forgive us for being sinners, or to save us from a future hell. This prayer cultivates and activates the unquenchable desire to realize and demonstrate more of God's nature in individual consciousness. As Christ Jesus prayed after his last supper with his disciples, "O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was."  John 17:5.
