Recently, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, I saw a special exhibit of the paintings of the Italian seventeenth-century artist Caravaggio. The artist's use of light and shadow, his emphasis on realistic human detail, certainly showed his ability to appreciate and utilize both beauty and technique. These were the works of a truly great artist.
But then I read of his comparatively short life, which was so marred by notorious instability and personal failings. And I thought how grand it would have been if Christian Science had been available to help him overcome his difficulties. Who knows how many more works of art he might have produced?
Talent such as Caravaggio's seems rare. Yet we all have something unique to share with the world—our own truly inspired understanding of God. How can we better express the self-discipline that brings our inspiration to full bloom?
