Hearing God's answer

From the August 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many people through the ages have asked God for help and guidance. Perhaps you are one of them. Maybe you have felt at times that God's direction is difficult to hear or understand—that you are not quite sure whether your sense of what to do is God's answer or not. Perhaps you have forged ahead, hoping for the best; or maybe you have hesitated, unsure which way to go.

The Bible is full of wonderful promises of God's ability and willingness to guide us. For example, the prophet Isaiah promised, "Thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left." Isa. 30:21. What do we need to do in order to hear the word behind us, to be sure that God is directing us and we know what to do?

A passage in Proverbs answers this question: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Prov. 3:5, 6. The three directives in this statement indicate how to listen and hear God's answers to our dilemmas.
