Testimonies of Healing

Early in her marriage, my mother had...

From the August 1985 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Early in her marriage, my mother had an instantaneous healing of an eye ulcer that she was told would result in blindness. She was healed through Christian Science treatment. (Her testimony was printed in the September 4, 1971, Christian Science Sentinel.) This healing led her to study Science in earnest. As a result, these teachings were practiced in our family from the time I was very young. Christian Science has been indispensable in dealing with family relationships and in raising my own children. God's continuous loving care has been proved on numerous occasions.

One testing time came when I was considering marriage. I wondered if religion would be a stumbling block. I was an active Christian Scientist; my husband-to-be was an active member of a Protestant church and didn't know much about Christian Science. After attending church with me for a time, he told me he didn't feel ready to embrace Science. However, he lovingly agreed that our children could be raised in Science and would have Christian Science treatment when there were problems. He never once went back on this promise.

Once he and our two boys were on a Cub Scout paper drive when the younger son gashed his leg. His father brought him home, quickly thinking (he later told me) that he would pick me up, proceed to the hospital emergency room, and have the wound stitched. When they came home I was able to take the youngster calmly in my arms, and we began to sing "Shepherd, show me how to go" —from the poem "'Feed My Sheep'" by Mrs. Eddy, set to music as Hymn Nos. 304-309 in the Christian Science Hymnal. This was one of our family's favorite hymns. In a few moments the fear was quieted and the wound stopped bleeding. I cleaned and covered the area. There was no more mention of going to the hospital, and in just a few days the wound healed without scars.
