Class instruction

From the March 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The chapter titled "Recapitulation" in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, the Christian Science textbook by Mary Baker Eddy, is the basis for class instruction in Christian Science.

A Christian Scientist who is considering Primary class instruction will want to review this chapter. Mrs. Eddy says in the opening paragraph on page 465: "This chapter is from the first edition of the author's class-book, copyrighted in 1870. After much labor and increased spiritual understanding, she revised that treatise for this volume in 1875. Absolute Christian Science pervades its statements, to elucidate scientific metaphysics."

It's interesting how "Recapitulation" came to be "the chapter for the classroom" (see Retrospection and Introspection by Mrs. Eddy, p. 83). The leaflet " 'Putting first things first' and 'Learning How to Learn': Two messages from The Christian Science Board of Directors" (available from Clerk's Membership Services at The Mother Church) tells something of this, and even more about the value of class instruction.
