The continuity of Mary Baker Eddy's leadership

From the March 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Since the discovery of Christian Science in 1866, countless men, women, and children have been liberated from sin, healed of disease, and awakened to fuller happiness and productivity. These individuals naturally have a deep and sincere appreciation for Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science and the Leader of the Christian Science movement. They understand that through her the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus has been revealed.

God's revelation came to Mrs. Eddy through spiritual sense. This enabled her to understand that God is both the cause and condition of all real being. Thus she was able to see beyond corporeal selfhood to man's identity in God's likeness—the true identity of everyone. With this radical spiritual change of thinking she not only healed others; she taught them how to utilize the healing truth for themselves, as Christ Jesus had required of all Christians who would follow his example.

As the immensity of Mrs. Eddy's spiritual discovery is understood, one inevitably realizes the importance of being a loyal follower of her leadership—a leadership that continues, through her writings, to follow faithfully in the way of Christ. Obedience to the saving truth she discovered makes radical changes in thinking and conduct. As these changes take place, one's true selfhood as God's idea is recognized and progressively brought to light. Then one has an even deeper appreciation for Mrs. Eddy and her gift to humanity.
