One of my earliest memories is that of sitting at a table in a Sunday School class upstairs in an old house that was our branch Church of Christ, Scientist. Though I didn't always appreciate Sunday School, I never resisted coming. In fact, I regularly attended up to the age of twenty and afterward attended church. It gave me a good foundation for serious study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy later on.
I've had many healings. The way of realizing these proofs of God's love has been Christian Science practice—first by my parents, and later through my own efforts and with the help of Christian Science practitioners I called at different times. Two healings stand out: one was overcoming a longstanding problem of being ill at ease socially, and the other involved a career change.
About five years after finishing college, I began to feel that my life was in a rut. I shared a house with several friends and we enjoyed many recreational and social activities. However, although I was comfortable in group activities, a longstanding problem of shyness made me uncomfortable in situations with just one other person—especially dates. At first I saw no hope of changing this, and so I continued participating just in group activities. Finally, though, one evening I called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful help. We talked about God's will not being a static thing. I realized then that I didn't have to cling to the good that had come to me yesterday or last year, but I could accept good today from Him whom Revelation describes as declaring (21:5), "Behold, I make all things new."
