Sending new hymns— an act of gratitude

From the March 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Time remains for students of Christian Science to recommend new texts and tunes for the English-language edition of the Christian Science Hymnal. Between now and the first of October, the date for receiving this material, we fully expect the modest, but promising, early response to swell to an abundant supply of ideas for the coming edition.

What is impelling Christian Scientists to join in the gathering of new hymns for our Hymnal? Love for Christian Science —and gratitude for the hymns that have comforted, inspired, and supported them, often over long lifetimes.

Hymns are woven into the very fabric of daily experience, as recent comments show. In countless scenes of business and family life—from times of great trial to quiet moments with children—words and music from the Hymnal have "restored spiritual perspective," "conquered hateful thoughts," "helped me to be honest with myself," "counseled patience and humility," "given me the resolve to go forward," "provided a strong sense of God's direction," "comforted, calmed, and given me courage."
