Divinely inspired congregational worship

From the June 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Do you ever wonder what it might have been like to have been present at the gatherings of the early Christians described in the book of Acts? It is said of the participants in one of these gatherings, "They were all with one accord in one place." Acts 2:1.

Peter explained that the phenomenon of unity which marked the outpouring of the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit, fulfilled an Old Testament promise: "And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: . . . and it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Acts 2:18, 21.

Is fulfillment of that promise confined to worship in early Christian times? No! God's eternal manifestation, the Holy Spirit, is ever present to inspire, to heal, and to save. Speaking of the Christ-spirit which governed him, Christ Jesus said, "Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them." Matt. 18:20.
