My gratitude goes out for Mrs. Eddy's vision in providing for the establishment of Christian Science organizations at universities and colleges (see Manual of The Mother Church, Art. XXIII, Sect. 8). During my years at university, our college organization was for me a symbol of God's ever-present help—an anchor in my life —which taught me clearly that as we put God first and serve Him, our lives are inevitably blessed.
After obtaining my first degree, I wished to take a teacher's certificate. At the same time the opportunity was open for me to pursue a second, higher degree course of one year. I was not certain whether teaching was to be my vocation, and so it seemed right also to improve my academic qualifications. Thus with further government funds for one year only, I was faced with what seemed an insolvable problem—taking both courses simultaneously. Although each was considered full-time, both seemed to me to be necessary and valuable. I knew that God's wisdom would show me the way. As I prayed, I felt led to ask about taking both courses at the same time.
Despite meeting a rejection from the educational authorities, I pursued my inquiries until my tutor finally stepped in and told me I could take both degree courses. Special arrangements were made for my teaching practice to be in the university town so that I could attend the degree course. Much doubt about the wisdom of my decision was expressed by fellow students and staff, as one out of every two students usually failed the degree course. However, because I had already seen God's hand in operation (in the form of my tutor's allowing me to take both courses), my faith was strong. I was convinced of the truth of Christ Jesus' statement (Matt. 6:33) "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
