The summer following my third year of college, I auditioned for and was hired by a professional stock theater. I prepared prayerfully for this job by studying the definition of God found in the Glossary of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. It reads (p. 587): "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence."
The words "all-knowing, all-seeing, all acting" I had heard many times as a pupil in the Christian Science Sunday School. Now they took on new meaning for me and helped me overcome the fear that I lacked sufficient experience in acting. (I had performed in music and dance, but acting was fairly new to me.)
Through my study of the definition of God just quoted, I began to see that gaining acting experience was not my primary motive for working in the stock theater. My heartfelt desire was to understand more fully that as God's spiritual idea I express all of His qualities. My change of thought brought a sense of freedom and joy in preparing for the roles I had been assigned. I found unexpected ways to learn more about acting and the use of the speaking voice.
