Poems

Out of the listening

From the September 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Psalms 29:2)

Right in the midst of pressing obligations
and wondering what I need to do next,
I hear God talking to me.
(He quietly insists on being heard.
And as I give His voice ear,
it becomes the only message I hear.)

Hearing a command,
I listen even more earnestly,
and the noise of cluttered thoughts
grows
silent.

I am still.

His Word occupies my thought
until
the directive becomes
the force of holiness
and it makes me move
in simultaneous obedience
to its impulsion.

Out of the listening
a sanctuary is being formed
where listening ear and obedient action
coincide
and the beauty of holiness
becomes a living power,

and I catch a glimpse of what worship means.
