True demonstration heals

From the September 1986 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science healing is the most natural thing in the world. It comes straight from the infinite God, good, our beloved Father-Mother, who loves each of us with a love greater than we can possibly imagine. Our part is to welcome this gift of God and faithfully strive to demonstrate the healing truth in our lives. The question might be asked, however, "What do students of this Science mean when they refer to demonstration?"

When an individual undertakes to demonstrate Christian Science, he is setting about to show clearly through both his thoughts and his actions that God, divine Spirit, actually exists and has created man as His pure and wholly spiritual likeness. To show forth God's presence, power, and marvelous goodness —this needs to be the basic motive for our prayers and study. If this is not our motive, if we are attempting to "use" divine Science simply for the resolution of human difficulties, we are unwittingly adulterating the pure purpose of Science, and the corresponding results cannot help being disappointing.

This does not mean, of course, that we should not utilize Christian Science in the right sense to obtain physical and moral healing. The genuine demonstration of God's pure goodness is inevitably accompanied by such healing. But there is a vast difference between the attempted use of God's power to find comfort in matter and the prayerful and reverent turning to God for help in finding release from matter's apparent domination of our lives.
