About three years ago, one Friday after work I was incapacitated by a severe pain in my side. My wife sensed the urgency of the situation and, at my request, promptly called for prayerful assistance from a Christian Science practitioner. The willing response of that dear person was greatly appreciated.
Soon the practitioner arrived at our home. After talking to me for a short while at my bedside, she asked if I was willing to rely completely on God for healing. Her question at first was startling to me. But it served to banish any lingering doubt I had about turning unreservedly to God in this emergency. I assured her that Christian Science was the only approach to healing that I had confidence in, for it had proved to be a wonderfully effective means of protection, guidance, and healing for our whole family over many years.
During the evening, though I lapsed into semiconsciousness at times, I was always able to hear my wife reading aloud to me the Bible Lesson (outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly), and articles from the Christian Science periodicals. This was proof to me that the Christ is always present in human consciousness — supporting and sustaining us through any challenge.
