Some years ago I was confined to bed with fever, hallucinations, lack of appetite, and an inability to stand, walk, or move my legs. I prayed for myself, and when I felt in need of prayerful assistance, I called a Christian Science practitioner. During the first week I was grateful to see the fever, hallucinations, and lack of appetite healed quickly.
During these challenging times I turned to spiritual truths in the Bible and in Mrs. Eddy's writings. These commands from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy were particularly helpful: "Rise in the conscious strength of the spirit of Truth to overthrow the plea of mortal mind, alias matter, arrayed against the supremacy of Spirit" (pp. 390-391); "Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God's government" (p. 393).
The turning point came a week and a half later when, through much prayer, I decided to be obedient to an idea that had come to me a few months before. I had pushed the idea aside because I didn't want to carry it out and was afraid, but now I knew in my heart that it was right. As a result of prayer, the desire to be obedient to this idea overcame the fear of following through with it. In looking back I can see that removing the obstacle of fear through my decision freed me to make physical progress, too, because a moment after making the decision I was able to begin walking again.
