Can a church really love you?

From the June 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Through the years I've had many opportunities for spiritual growth—though at the time I may not have immediately seen them as opportunities!

Membership in The Mother Church is more than a matter of joining—it's a matter of uniting with truly Christian love, of being supported by the daily prayers and spiritual progress of Christian Scientists throughout the world.

Perhaps the most jolting experience, the one that resulted in the greatest step forward in my spiritual journey, came when I suddenly found myself alone with three young children to care for and no particular job skills—or so I thought —at the time. In spite of the loving support of family and friends, plus periodic help from a Christian Science practitioner, my physical and mental health hit rock bottom. I felt completely cutoff. Why? Because I connected love and security with marriage and home. Now both were gone.
