Graduate

(to a Christian Science nurse)

From the June 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

You have stood the test.
Where others might cave in
you pick up the pieces.
Sustained by Truth
you have proved that we can stand
unmoved by the lie
(whether it looks like the great red dragon
or only a little serpent).

You give me a love
that is absolutely firm,
that never stops expecting me to grow,
the faith that calms my fears,
the gentleness that whisks away all thought of pain
the tenderness that cradles me
—right where I am—
scared, weak, hopeful, or discouraged —
the tenderness
that cradles me in spiritual vision
of my oneness with only what God is.
