In June 1988, Washington University Technology Associates, Inc., and Quinn Evans/Architects studied the condition of the church buildings. Their report is called a "Technical examination and condition report with recommendations for restoration and repairs of masonry, roof and architectural details for The Original Mother Church, The Mother Church Extension, and the Portico Addition." Their analysis indicated that work should be started as soon as possible. Their estimate of the total ten-year cost is $10 million.
As a result, The Mother Church has commenced a ten-year program for the restoration of the church buildings. It includes repairing or replacing roofing systems, cleaning exterior surfaces, and sealing stone surfaces from the harmful effects of acid rain. The first step of the ten-year program—the replacement of the flat roof on an area of the Extension—has begun.
Dedication of a branch church or society is a public affirmation of the importance of Church in the lives of Christian Scientists and in the community. When an edifice is free of debt, churches and societies often hold a dedicatory service.
