In 1953, when I was living in Kenya, I became very ill with malaria and then also contracted typhoid. After weeks of fever and loss of consciousness, I was not expected to survive. My husband cabled my sister who was in India. She had recently begun to study Christian Science, and she asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me. The next day I regained consciousness and began to recover.
Several months later I met the practitioner and received a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I read it whenever I could. I particularly loved the Lord's Prayer, with its spiritual interpretation.
A result of the typhoid was that I had terrible pain and weakness in my legs. I did not have any medical treatment but instead asked the practitioner to continue praying with me. I overcame the fear that I would lose the use of my legs, which had been predicted, and in about two months I was completely healed.
