A young Ugandan found Christian Science in an unusual way. A Mother Church member who lives alone in a remote area of the north central region of the United States looks for new ways to reach out from her home. Through such Christian organizations as World Vision she sends money and letters all over the world to feed the hungry. She had already been writing to someone in Uganda when she got a letter from this young man, whose family had been murdered. He said he had come across an empty envelope in a dust heap. Rainwater had obscured the recipient's name but not sender's address. He decided to write to her for help. The Mother Church member recognized a Christliness in his thought, and she continued communicating with him. Eventually he took up the study of Christian Science. In November 1989 he became a member of The Mother Church.
From a letter to the Clerk of The Mother Church
"When I came across the 'Letterbox' on shortwave three years ago, little did I know it would give me a knowledge of an unknown truth. Unknown because it is the first time I have heard of the Christian Science. Now through a series of communications with you, everything (truth, love, good, and God) came to manifest itself to me. I am now united with a branch of the Church of Christ, Scientist. This local Christian Science Society became known to me in a letter received last April through which I received addressed of branch churches and societies in Nigeria, including Reading Rooms. From then on I continuously visited the Reading Rooms, where I found the inspiring writings of the Founder, Mary Baker Eddy. I therefore give you a pat on the back for being my eye opener to truth. I was suffering from 'peptic ulcer' for almost a year but now no more."
