ENCIRCLING THE GLOBE

From the June 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science Organization at University of Hamburg, West Germany

From the many lectures offered for the German field, we chose a lecture titled "Leben ohne Furcht" ("Life Without Fear") for our winter semester. The ... subject seemed to fit best into the then current situation at the university (strikes, demonstrations, and so forth). The strikes during our winter semester had brought a great deal of instability into the community. We were especially grateful to be able to work closely with [the lecturer] while preparing for the lecture. We decided to hold the lecture in a room that is situated at the center of our campus. This lecture was attended by an extraordinary number of people ....

As already mentioned, our winter semester was very unstable. We therefore contacted Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Hamburg. Their members also work closely with the university campus. We met to share with one another metaphysical ideas concerning the situation at the university. The preparatory meeting proved to be very helpful, and we felt the lecture had a healing effect on the campus. The demonstrations and strike activities were peaceful and orderly, although violence had been anticipated. All examinations that were due at the end of the semester could be written in a peaceful atmosphere without the auditoriums being taken over by the strike.
