From its founding, Christian Science was described not simply as a church but as a new religious movement. It remains new in heart and spirit. As someone once said, "A movement moves." Articles on the subject of church and movement appear regularly in this section.

Who needs Church?

From the June 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Have you ever contemplated quitting church? Have you ever thought, "Who needs it? I'd be better off just to study the Bible Lesson  In the Christian Science Quarterly . on my own instead of going to church services. If they're going to keep making unwise decisions, then they're going to do it without me!"

These could have been my words one night as I drove home from a church committee meeting. I was the new chairman, and that first meeting had not gone well. I disagreed strongly with several opinions that had been expressed, and I was frustrated by the committee members' lack of willingness to accept assignments.

The following morning, as I read the weekly Bible Lesson, I prayed to renew my gratitude and love for Church. In the lesson was the account in Exodus of Moses leading the children of Israel to the Promised Land. In light of my own church situation, this account took on new and healing inspiration for me.
