Poems

Self seen

(Numbers, chapters 13-14, and Joshua, chapter 3)

From the July 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Promised Canaan spread green hills to invite
Our scouts who first surveyed the Promised Land,
But we were grasshoppers in our own sight.

When Caleb urged that Israel march and fight,
Supported in their quest by heaven's hand,
Promised Canaan spread green hills to invite.

But Anak's sons, gigantic in their might,
Loomed larger in our eyes than God's command,
And we were grasshoppers in our own sight.

When Joshua praised the vineyards of delight,
Assured no foe could thwart what God had planned,
Promised Canaan spread green hills to invite.

For forty wandering years we lived our fright
And watched our children supersede the band
Who cringed as grasshoppers in our own sight.

When Israel marched through Jordan's flood, despite
Dire threats of Jericho, they trudged dry sand:
Promised Canaan spread green hills to invite,
No longer grasshoppers in our own sight.
