Who can afford it?

From the July 1990 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Readers of this magazine and the other Christian Science religious periodicals often are comforted, inspired, or healed by what they read.

For one who continues to be blessed by these articles and testimonies it will probably seem natural at some point to want to support these publications. And one of the most tangible ways to do this is to subscribe for them. In fact, subscribing is a token of endorsement. When we send in a new subscription or renew an existing one, we are, in effect, saying, "I support what this magazine stands for, its message and mission, and I want to express my gratitude for it."

A strong desire to support the periodicals was instrumental in lifting me out of a situation that threatened limitation in almost every direction. After many years of having ample financial means, I found myself with a greatly reduced income. Basic needs were being met temporarily, but I couldn't see how the little extra income I was receiving could possibly keep up with household expenses, keep my car running, and enable me to contribute financially to my church, not to mention meeting any unexpected expense.
