THRESHOLD/21st CENTURY

THINKING ABOUT CHRISTIAN SCIENCE AND BUSINESS

From the May 1991 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Part 1 of this two-part interview was published in last month's "Threshold/21st Century." In it, the Journal explored with South African businessman Robert S. K. Tucker how the teachings of Christian Science can help in shaping everyday business life to bring it more closely into line with Biblical priorities.

He explained how a reorientation of business aims—away from maximizing bottom-line profits and in the direction of service to God and one's fellowman—can be found practical in the daily business world and essential in light of mankind's great socioeconomic needs. He told how this sort of refocusing had led the company he now heads to make more than 60,000 home loans to black South African families over a four-year period. The company had previously made none.

In this closing segment, Mr. Tucker discusses some of the fundamental concerns of businesses—red tape, deadline pressures, profits, and the outlook for the future—in light of the teachings of Christian Science.
