CHURCH NEWS

From the February 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About four years ago, when I was Sunday School superintendent, we began actively encouraging young people and children to participate in the Wednesday evening testimony meetings. The Sunday School teachers gathered for a workshop and discussed ways of encouraging children to attend on Wednesday and give testimonies. A letter was sent to parents, inviting children to participate in Wednesday testimony meetings. And teachers began discussing the value of testifying, explaining to students the elements of a testimony and encouraging the children to tell of their healing experiences in class.

The Children's Room staff also communicated with parents whose older children were remaining in the nursery during the Wednesday services. Children aged five and older were actively encouraged to attend even a portion of the meeting. With the parents' permission, a staff member would bring the children from the nursery to the auditorium when the testimonies began, sometimes sitting with them, sometimes encouraging them to find their parents and sit with them.

The membership was alerted to think of Wednesday evening as a family night, when children and parents could join together in learning about God.
