"If ye be willing and obedient..."

From the May 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I heard a lovely story recently about a family party at a fancy restaurant. When the huge menus were handed out, the host requested that one be given to his small grandson, who sat on his left. When the waiter finally got around to asking him for his order, the little boy climbed up on his grandfather's lap. Giving him a big hug, he said: "Oh, Granddaddy, I just want what you want!"

Isn't this a prayer that each one of us should pray continually to our heavenly Father: "Oh, Abba (Daddy), I just want what You want!" Sometimes we may feel, as the little boy did, that we sincerely have no desire apart from our Father's will for us. But other times it may require a tremendous struggle before we can give up our personal desires and self-will and yield wholly to God's will. Aren't we apt to tell God what we want and then wait rather impatiently for Him to comply with our demands? And if things don't turn out as we think they should, or as quickly as we think they should, aren't we sometimes apt to blame others? Moreover, we may not always be quick to obey when God, divine Principle, makes demands upon us.

Christ Jesus set the example for perfect obedience, but even he had a struggle with human will the night before his crucifixion. Through incredible prayerful effort, however, he "won" this battle and could say, "Not as I will, but as thou wilt." Matt. 26:39. As a result of his obedience, he was able, through his resurrection and ascension, to prove for humanity the eternality of life.
