What it takes to heal

From the May 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science healing is a holy experience. It results whenever a receptive, unprejudiced heart hungrily turns to the power of God, Truth, and responds to it. Simply put, the human yields; the divine does the work.

Such a precious experience has an irreversible effect on us. It consists of spiritual regeneration as well as the inevitable byproduct of such regeneration—healing of the body. The purification of thought naturally dispels the very sins and fears that are the foundation of bodily problems. The body cannot be adequately considered separate from thought.

Divine Truth, through the influence of the healing, saving Christ, enlightens human consciousness, enabling us to discern the fact that God is the perfect All-in-all and that the true and only man is His spiritual image and likeness. Christ shows us that this likeness is exempt from material laws and conditions. This truth, realized through prayer as an ever-present fact in relation to whatever situation confronts us, adjusts the mistaken human concept of things and brings healing through the power of Truth itself. Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says, "The eternal Truth destroys what mortals seem to have learned from error, and man's real existence as a child of God comes to light." Science and Health, pp. 288-289.
