Our view of the economy—limited or boundless?

Original in Spanish

From the May 1993 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some years ago I had to make a trip abroad to the United States when the economic conditions in my own country were very difficult. The situation was such that buying dollars was not only very expensive but possible only five days before departure and with a purchased ticket in hand.

All the obstacles to taking the trip made it look as if it was almost impossible for me to carry through with my plans. Nevertheless, I searched for inspiration in the Bible and found these words of Christ Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: "Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?... Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?... But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Matt. 6:25, 31, 33.

When I read this and contemplated deeply its meaning, I saw that Jesus was speaking about the importance of looking beyond the human evidence of wants and needs. I had to change my concept of the economy with its variable, limited laws and search for the true and divine economy—the kingdom of heaven. I saw, as never before, that the kingdom of heaven isn't starry space or something that we will see in the hereafter, but rather the reign of absolute, unchangeable harmony; it is the realm of God, infinite, ever-present Mind.
