Christian Science came to my attention as the result of a deep longing to bring more good into my life. I also wanted to be free from a lifestyle that included social drinking and shallow relationships. A woman whom I worked with was a Christian Scientist, and although co-workers (including myself) sometimes teased her about her religion, and even scorned the idea of healing through prayer, deep down I realized that she knew something I wanted and needed to know. I had made a decision to try to be a better person. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to break away from my former behavior and relationships and would be drawn back into the way of life that had been so unsatisfying; however, this desire for a better way of life proved to be a source of strength and led to healing.
Eventually I inquired of my friend about Christian Science and attended a Wednesday testimony meeting at her church. She gave me a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. I remember hearing read from this book the author's account of what followed her discovery of the Science of Christian healing: "For three years after my discovery, I sought the solution of this problem of Mind-healing, searched the Scriptures and read little else, kept aloof from society, and devoted time and energies to discovering a positive rule. The search was sweet, calm, and buoyant with hope, not selfish nor depressing."
I knew I had found what I was looking for. I read Science and Health at every opportunity, day and night, and soaked up its spiritual truths like a blotter.
