Finding proof of God's care

From the January 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Trials are proofs of God's care." Science and Health, p. 66. That's a sentence from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science and founded The First Church of Christ, Scientist. Now, sometimes people find that statement disturbing. Does it mean God sends trials to us? No, trials send us to God. And when we turn to God, we inevitably find proof of His care. That's what we're going to be talking about—proofs of God's care.

I suppose for the vast majority of people today, what we think of as the great Depression of the 1930s isn't even a memory—it's just history, albeit recent history.

I was born during the early years of the Depression, and so I must admit my memories of it are quite vague. My parents never discussed those hard times (at least they didn't talk about them in front of me), and so it really wasn't until many years later, after I'd married, that I finally heard the story of their experience.
