Step by step, to and through class

From the January 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When I look back on the experience of Primary class instruction in Christian Science, I think of it as a unique step taken, guided and guarded by God. The Bible promises, "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way." Ps. 37:23. That's certainly how it feels in hindsight.

But it wasn't an easy step to take. After a period of hoping to find the right teacher, I had to learn that the desire for class needs to be taken to God in earnest prayer. Eventually I realized that the receipt of the gift of class must come from obedience to the infinite, all-knowing Mind. Human judgment alone is not up to the tasks involved! In finding the right teacher, choosing the right time, and getting to and through Primary class, it's natural to need God's help every step of the way, and to have it!

I waited a few years from the first stirring of the desire to take class to actually getting there. Then I realized more and more clearly that I had to stop looking "out there" for a person to teach me and start searching deeply for an understanding of God's irresistible law of self-revelation. In my study and prayer one night I earnestly cherished my desire for class from this new viewpoint, and the next day the way began to open up. In the morning I received a letter from a Christian Science teacher whom I had never heard of, in a distant land, unexpectedly asking for a reference for a potential pupil of hers. I furnished the reference and started a correspondence that eventually led me to her next class.
