Reading Room thrives in World Trade Center

From the April 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy tells us, "Trials are proofs of God's care." She precedes this statement with a quotation from Shakespeare: "Sweet are the uses of adversity; / Which, like the toad, ugly and venomous, / Wears yet a precious jewel in his head" (p. 66).

The explosion in the Trade Center in February 1993 received worldwide attention. The seriousness of the damage and its potential for even greater destruction were made quite clear through news coverage, but what was not made known was the evidence of spiritual activity as people turned to God, to the Bible, and to the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.

Several people were led to pray shortly before the blast. A month after the detonation, two young men entered the Reading Room and walked into the study room. One said, "I just wanted to show my friend where I was reading the Bible the day of the blast. I'm usually working in Building '1' as a messenger, but God directed my footsteps here that day."
