When those close to us suffer

From the April 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What could I do to help? A caller said my mother would not live another day. My mother and I always had a close, warm relationship. I loved her deeply.

She had been ill and under a doctor's care for some time, and although my choice as a Christian Scientist had always been to rely exclusively on prayer for healing, I respected her decision to have medical treatment. And yet I could not stand by while she was in a critical situation and do nothing. I yearned to help.

Many Christian Scientists face this kind of situation at some time. If it's not a close relative whom we want to help, it may be a dear friend, or even someone we don't know whose story of suffering has touched us. When our heart goes out to someone in need, we are not helpless. We can pray—and this is a powerful help.
