Confession in two voices

From the April 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal


The following letter landed on the Editor's desk accompanied by a long manuscript:

I am sending you the enclosed article at the urging of a professor I had last year. Demand might come closer to the truth. It comes from a class in creative nonfiction I took last year at the university.

My fellow students kept bugging me to know more about Christian Science. I responded in generalities and eventually wrote an article in which I tried to maintain a "professional," i.e., distanced, stance from my religion. It didn't work and was roundly criticized by my seminar group. Well, I prayed diligently, as you might guess, and what's enclosed is the final result.
