With whom are we arguing?

From the April 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

How often in our daily lives do we find ourselves confronting the picture before our eyes that would try to convince us that the material world is the real and that God's creation is the unreal? This is a constant challenge. Yet if we're honestly seeking truth, we will willingly take the side of divine Truth against error, the side of good against evil, the side of Spirit against matter. We will vigilantly argue for spiritual reality. As an attorney in a court of law must debate a legal issue on one side or the other, so we must be prepared to stand on the side of the true concept of man.

It would be natural to ask, however, "With whom are we arguing?" One dictionary defines argue as "to give reasons for or against; . . . debate." These definitions contain an inherent assumption—that there exist two entities. One on one side of the issue, and the other taking the opposite side. But are there really two entities?

This question "With whom are we arguing?" and its ultimate answer came up in my experience several years ago in what, to me, was a very dramatic example demonstrating the truth of God's spiritual creation. For a period of a year or more, I had been subject to physical attacks that would occur periodically with intense pain. During these attacks I was rendered almost completely incapable of movement. My wife and I devoted much time to prayer and study of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, in an attempt to heal the situation, but it seemed to persist.
