Testimonies of healing shared in Christian Science churches and magazines have contributed a great deal to my spiritual growth. One healing in particular awakened me more fully to God's ever-present love, and to the efficacy of Christian Science to heal. I hope sharing it will give courage to others to persevere in finding true healing, no matter what or how extreme may be the trouble.
While on an overnight visit with friends, I rose at 4 a.m. and, not wishing to disturb their sleep by turning on a hallway light, groped my way in the dark to what I thought to be the bathroom door. As it proved, I had opened the basement door, and I plunged down a long flight of stairs, landing on the concrete floor below and hitting my head. This happened so quickly that as I was tumbling, all that came to thought was, "God is Love, and I am conscious of that all-embracing Love." I did not lose consciousness.
My friend came to my aid and assisted me to bed. I asked her to read one particular passage from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy concerning accidents. Being somewhat dazed, I could not recall the page. My friend, who was unfamiliar with the textbook, opened to page 424 on the second try, and read the passage I was trying to remember: "Accidents are unknown to God, or immortal Mind, and we must leave the mortal basis of belief and unite with the one Mind, in order to change the notion of chance to the proper sense of God's unerring direction and thus bring out harmony." I spent the next few hours affirming my inseparability from our Father-Mother God. I thought intently about the truth of my spiritual identity in His likeness. The next paragraph states, "Under divine Providence there can be no accidents, since there is no room for imperfection in perfection."
