Most of us can probably recall having known someone for whom the life of Christ Jesus made a genuine difference, someone who deeply loved the Master and turned consistently to the gospel accounts of his life and teachings for guidance. Perhaps this individual, without making a conscious attempt to do so, caused us to glimpse more of the profound relevance of the Master's example.
For me, one of my teachers in the Christian Science Sunday School was just such a person. I recall one Sunday morning when he spoke very tenderly to our class about all that Jesus did to show us the way of salvation. It was evident that this teacher was communicating from the depths of his own enlightened study of the Bible. Here was a man for whom the gospel record was not just a story; for him it was alive with meaning. I was a child at the time, but the experience left an enduring impression. I remember thinking that there must be more to Jesus' mission than I had been seeing. And I also remember feeling the beginnings of a desire to discover more about the wonderful message of the gospel and the promise it held for my own life.
Anyone approaching the New Testament with a sincere willingness to learn can receive of the Father fresh, penetrating insights into Jesus' ministry. This is an ongoing need for all Christians, including Christian Scientists. Mrs. Eddy, who was herself a consecrated Bible student and devoted follower of the Master, writes, "My students need to search the Scriptures and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' to understand the personal Jesus' labor in the flesh for their salvation...."
