Dividing light from darkness: an answer to prayer

From the July 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Moving to a new house can be a happy, exciting experience. Our family had moved many times, and the process of relocating had always been carried out smoothly. Recently, however, when my husband and I were involved in a combined sale of our home and the purchase of another home, we had a different experience. The payment for our property was long overdue, and this jeopardized the closing on the purchase of our new home. We also discovered that certain aspects of the sale transactions had been misrepresented to us. It seemed we were caught in the middle of what is called a domino effect, resulting in problems that appeared beyond our control.

One morning the situation had reached a crisis, and as I sat down to read the Bible Lesson from the Christian Science Quarterly, I sincerely prayed to be shown, through the inspired words in the Bible and in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, the steps to take in working out a peaceful solution to what appeared to be an impasse. This situation seemed overwhelming to me. Yet as a student of Christian Science I knew that worry and fear were manifestations of distrust in God's ability to govern His offspring harmoniously. Through consecrated prayer I would be able to see what was needed to bring healing to the misunderstandings.

The subject of the Bible Lesson that week was 'Adam and Fallen Man," which seemed appropriate since I was feeling so discouraged right then! I opened the Bible and read the first citation: "And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness." Gen. 1:4 Here was the answer to the problem in one simple, profound statement. The Bible was telling me that God had already and eternally divided the light from the darkness; hence, I could not be in a situation that partook of both light and darkness, good and evil, because they cannot exist together. Only good is real, and this goodness, or harmony, was right then the truth of my life.
