Our position on disease

From the July 1994 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Those who practice Christ Jesus' method of healing disease through prayer as taught in Christian Science discover that they must be persistent and consistent in maintaining the spiritual facts. They are taking a position based upon Scriptural revelation and thoroughly proved by the Master: that God is infinite good and that man is spiritual and whole, reflecting God. Therefore there is and can be no reality in disease.

If during a challenging time our demonstration of this premise seems limited, we should not become discouraged but instead turn unreservedly to God for more spiritual understanding. In Science and Health Mary Baker Eddy writes, "A grain of Christian Science does wonders for mortals, so omnipotent is Truth, but more of Christian Science must be gained in order to continue in well doing." Science and Health, p. 449 More humility, patience, and a deeper commitment to obeying God's laws promote progress. They help establish and maintain a solid, unshakable conviction of the omnipotence of God and the nothingness of whatever is unlike Him, including disease.

Our efforts toward this goal are blessed by our heavenly Father. His revelations of truth lead us away from indecision or any halfway position to total reliance on Truth. Mrs. Eddy puts it this way: "Tireless Being, patient of man's procrastination, affords him fresh opportunities every hour; but if Science makes a more spiritual demand, bidding man go up higher, he is impatient perhaps, or doubts the feasibility of the demand." Christian Healing, p. 19 This does not mean that God sends disease or other problems for us to solve. On the contrary, opportunities from God include spiritual ideas and facts that, when we accept and apply them, solve our problems. The spiritual fact uncovers and destroys any lie about itself that we might have ignorantly and temporarily accepted.
