From the January 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I was blessed to be raised in a home where Christian Science was conscientiously practised and its teachings adhered to. However, it was not until I was faced with the challenges of marriage and the raising of four children that its teachings became my own and a way of life.

There have been many healings and instances of protection and guidance that have helped us over many difficulties. But above all we realize as a family how learning and living, even in a modest way, the fundamentals of this religion result in a life free of many of the illnesses and stresses usually associated with the raising of children. I have gradually learnt to overcome an overprotective love for my children and fear for their welfare, with the knowledge that they are God's children and entirely in His care.

I would like to tell of just two of the many healings our family has experienced. When one of my children was only five years old, we visited some friends who lived on a farm. My own horse was agisted on this property, and the children knew and loved him well. Our child approached the fence one day with great enthusiasm, holding in her hand half an apple for the horse to eat. With just as much enthusiasm the horse locked his jaws firmly on this treat, along with my daughter's hand, and started to back away. I was able to hold the horse's head so that he did release his jaws, but the injury to this little child's hand was quite alarming.
