From sorrow to joy

From the November 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christianity offers great hope for the bereaved and grieving. As Christ Jesus promised his disciples, "Your sorrow shall be turned into joy." John 16:20 We may wonder amid our tears how this can possibly be true. But through the Science of Christ, we can find the full comfort and answers we need. Then we are able to comfort others.

Shortly before Thanksgiving, on the way home from a church meeting, a woman found herself recalling with deep gratitude ways she had witnessed God's protection of her family and some of the spiritual truth she had learned.

She had learned through study of the Bible, in the light of Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy, that man is made in the likeness of Spirit, God, and so is spiritual, and that man and his creator could therefore never be separated, even for one moment. She remembered overcoming fear on one occasion by clinging to the Christianly scientific fact that spiritual man can never be vulnerable or weak—no matter how grim the human picture might be, no matter what the material senses might say.
