The straight and narrow way

From the December 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There is a way to harmonious living. It is revealed to us through the example of Christ Jesus, and today is explained to all through the teachings of Christian Science.

Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life." John 14:6. Christ, the saving divine influence that Jesus exemplified, leads us in the path from sense to Soul. Along this path we progress from a mortal sense of self separated from God to the consciousness of our true identity as God's spiritual idea, man.

The carnal mind, of which Paul spoke in his letter to the Christians at Rome, still holds a great number of people in bondage to the misconception of man. It suggests that man is a mortal launched into a dangerous world, that he can be swayed from one extreme to the other—from health to sickness, success to failure, wealth to poverty, righteous living to indulgence in evil—without warning, protection, or guidance. These errors of belief were repudiated by Jesus. The Master proved that the real man is ever in the bosom of the Father, safe in the knowledge of his spiritual status, perfection, completeness, and sinlessness.
