WRITING TO HEAL

"Part of the job"

From the February 1995 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many years ago I spoke to a longtime Christian Science teacher about the healing practice and teaching of Christian Science. He told me that writing for the periodicals was "part of the job." I hadn't thought of it like this before, but I can see that he was right. Sharing the richness of the healing mission through writing keeps it spilling over, so to speak. Others see its glory and possibilities. New inspiration and freshness unfold, and all are blessed.

I find that the biggest obstacle to writing is waiting for just the "right" time. This can take a long time! Remembering that it is "part of the job" has helped me make time for an activity that reaches out to hungry hearts. The discipline of staying with an unfolding theme until an article is mailed—and sometimes revised—brings deep satisfaction. We find that the ideas are really of God and must be free of personal sense or authorship.

The audience of an article in the periodicals includes thousands of sincere seekers for Truth. What ripples of good this suggests. The whole world is blessed when we approach our work with joy and see that writing is "part of the job."
