In college I was a bacteriology major. I took extra courses and on-the-job training, and wound up in charge of a hospital and a public health laboratory.
Then I fell in love with a Christian Scientist whom I had met while folk dancing. I asked a doctor friend what problems I would have in marrying a Christian Scientist, and he responded emphatically, "None!" I was surprised and asked, "With my medical background?" He answered that at least 75 percent of his practice was the faith that he instilled in people that they would get well. He said they might be helped 25 percent by medicine, but he was not sure about that. "Christian Science puts faith in God, where it belongs," he said.
I married that Christian Scientist, and very slowly began studying Christian Science. My husband lived Christian Science, but never preached it or discussed it with me.
