Shortly after I became acquainted with Christian Science, I was boiling the laundry on a makeshift stove. As I lifted up the pot, it slipped, and the boiling liquid poured all over me.
I cried aloud to God that He would not allow me to be harmed. I found that as I prayed, the unbearable pain stopped, and as I still had an errand to take care of, I went out. When I spoke with a woman about what had just happened, she didn't believe me, and her disbelief made me very sad; after all, God had just demonstrated His omnipotence to me.
When I came back to my room, the excruciating pain returned. The atmosphere in the room felt heavy and ominous. I later found that it is written in Science and Health, "In Christian Science, a denial of Truth is fatal, while a just acknowledgment of Truth and of what it has done for us is an effectual help" (p. 372). I suspect that I must have accepted this woman's denial of my healing, and so the pain returned.
