As I scrambled down the cliff to help Wade, I prayed to know that God was present, right there, right then; but the initial evidence indicated that this was a life-threatening situation. I became quite fearful for my father-in-law's life, and felt a heavy sense of personal responsibility.
Still, as a student of Christian Science, I knew that whatever the human evidence appeared to be, the spiritual fact that man is inseparable from God was absolute. When I reached the water, I realized that it would be extremely difficult to carry my father-in-law up the face of the cliff. The thought came clearly that he should be moved by boat.
As I was driving home to get our boat, I became confused and doubted the wisdom of what I was doing. But I realized that God had directed me to get the boat, and so I continued, even though it required that I be away from the others for nearly forty minutes.
