Letters

From the October 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Gospel of Mark

The new series on the Gospel of Mark starts out with one of the best written introductions I have read. I am a retired Episcopal priest who continues to serve in parishes as needed and who continually seeks to more fully understand Christ's message to us. I look forward to further articles in the series.

I am a longtime reader of The Christian Science Journal. The positive, upbeat, and joyful tone of your publication, including evidence of divine healing, is a cherished part of my reading and praying time.

I want to thank you for the lovely new series you are running on the Gospel of Mark. I look forward to each segment.

I knew the Bible very well as a child, but so much of its language stayed a complete mystery to me. It was not until I read Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy that I understood the language of the Bible. The Bible is my passion now. I read it thirstily, as though I had never known it before.

Deeper things of God

The articles and testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals have been so inspiring that, even in areas which, humanly speaking, could be referred to as isolated or lonely, they have served as good friends.

One Sunday a friend of mine who attends a church of a different denomination borrowed a copy of one of my Christian Science magazines. He told me later that what he had read in our publication threw much light on what his pastor had preached that day. [I find that friends] are always grateful for the awareness they gain of the deeper things of God.

New paper

I am concerned about the too-shiny paper of the Journal. I've spoken with a dozen subscribers who are having the same difficulty— having to shift the page constantly as they read, because of the glare. I cannot maintain sufficient attention to the message of the articles.

The new, fresh look of the Journal [in May] impressed me as I carried it into my home from my mailbox! The explanatory note on "Journal paper improvements" was most helpful. Best wishes for your ongoing progress.

When the paper in the Journal was changed, I found it difficult to read. My lamp was lighting up the shiny pages. I had missed reading the explanation in the Journal about the change. When a friend told me of it, I thought, "How wonderful that a way has been found to reduce costs!" I certainly wanted the greatest good for all and prayed to know that I would not be deprived in any way

A few days later I found that I could read easily, even with the lamp on. The article I was reading happened to be one about spiritual discernment, and I was thrilled. As the idea of discernment being spiritual was established in my thought, there was no further problem reading. Isn't that great!

Editor's note: While some readers were pleased when we started printing on a coated, glossy paper stock, more have written to say that the new paper made it difficult for them to read the Journal. You will have noticed that since August we have been printing the Journal pages on a paper with a flatter finish. With paper expenses rising as they have been, it is by no means easy to Jind just the right paper for all our readers without having to raise subscription rates. But we will continue to do everything we can to give the best service at an affordable price.

The Journal invites readers to engage in a lively exchange with one another regarding the ideas presented in its pages. Please send your comments and questions. Letters should include the writer's full name, address, and telephone number, and be addressed to:
