Abstinence and chastity—out of fashion?

From the December 1997 issue of The Christian Science Journal

• "Abstaining from extramarital sex is one of the most unpopular things a person can do, much less talk about. ... I abstain as an adult for the same reasons I did as a teen—the principle doesn't change, or the feeling of self-respect I get."—A. C. Green, professional basketball star (U.S. News & World Report, May 19, 1997, p. 59)

• "In an Indianapolis neighborhood where some teenage girls flaunt pregnancies like new hairdos, Aisha Fields is unabashedly square: She plans to abstain from sex until she marries."—front-page story (The Christian Science Monitor, August 26, 1997)

• "I'm waiting. I'm not ready at all. ... I'm not shutting myself off to guys. I'm just not having sex."—Jasmine Parkin, high-school student (The Boston Globe, June 25, 1997, p. D1)
