Christian Science Sentinel redesigned for 1998

In just a few weeks (beginning with the January 5 issue) the Christian Science Sentinel will have a fresh, new design to present its message more effectively to today's weekly magazine readers—today's honest seekers. It's the culmination of years of thought and prayer about the Sentinel's original healing mission and purpose, "to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love." Mary Baker Eddy, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353.

A cassette recording was mailed recently to current Sentinel subscribers, Reading Rooms, branch churches, and societies. The tape shares the vision for the magazine as it launches into its second century of service to humanity. To order the free cassette, please call 1–800–877–8400, M-F, 8:00 am-6:00 pm, ET, US and Canada only. Other countries call (617) 450–2790 .

We trust that with this redesign, the magazine will feel as much like home to our readers as ever—only with some fresh paint and window washing to let more light in.

Larger format

A great amount of prayerful work has gone into each and every aspect of the Sentinel, especially the size. The new, larger size is in response to Mary Baker Eddy's request to the Editors that the Sentinel be the same size as typical weeklies of the day (in her day, that meant a size of about 10" by 14"). The new format is similar to weekly magazines of today (about 8" x 10"). The larger size will enable the Sentinel to be clearly visible in the public arena, and more effective in delivering its message. The new Sentinel can easily be folded or "rolled" in half in order to fit into a glove compartment or purse.

Content

About 80 percent of the material in the Sentinel continues to be contributed by its readers. From the Sentinel's beginning in 1898, the Editors have had a responsibility to make sure that all those who are honestly seeking Truth can understand its message. The Editors continue to urge authors to bring to their writing as much of the spirit and depth of the Science of Christianity as possible. With the new design, a variety of graphic elements and type treatments will add visual interest.

Watch for it

The first issue of the newly designed Sentinel will be January 5, 1998. The fresh design should serve the readers of the Sentinel well, as the current design has for so many years. We hope you'll actively join us in praying for the success of the Sentinel's healing mission and purpose as it goes forward into its second century of service.
